All You Need To Know About Knee Braces

Knee braces are mostly used in recuperative medicine. They are made of hard plastic or soft materials like spandex. When it is necessary to temporarily restrict the movement of a patient’s knee, specially knitted, tight fabrics are sometimes used.

When a knee brace is recommended by a doctor and worn in the right way, it will help the joints heal faster in the best position. This is because the brace will ensure the right flow of blood around the knees while preventing any movements that will make the situation worse for the patient.

This article gives you a breakdown of knee brace. It discusses its uses, types, how it works, and things to take note before purchasing one.

Considerations When Buying Knee Braces

#1 Material
  • Neoprene

Knee braces made from neoprene are very popular on the market, and they have a high demand. What makes them special is that they retain heat, and this helps to reduce swelling in the injured part of the knee.

  • Cotton

Cotton braces are known for their simplicity and near-natural feel. This brace is highly valued because it hardly ever causes irritation to the knee. The skin can also get enough air and breathe freely.

  • Polyester

This type of knee brace is very helpful for protection against knee abrasions. It is also very comfortable and good for post-operative knee support.

  • Nylon/nylon mesh

Nylon knee braces are very light, and they offer support and comfort at the same time. They are also waterproof.

#2 Size/Tightness

The size or the tightness of knee braces matters.

As much as you would like to feel comfortable, you do not want a knee brace that will be too loose to help you achieve any healing. So, choose a brace that has a bit of compression and tightness.

If you get a knee brace that is too tight, you will continually have to loosen the straps and interrupt the healing process. Lynhealthtech can provide full sizes for each type of knee brace and support OEM serive.

#3 Range of Motion

The injury will dictate the allowed motion in the knee. A few braces work as stabilizers, while the others are immobilizers. Stabilizers offer support as well as enable some amount of movement, while immobilizers totally restrict the movement for a speedy recovery.

Categories of Orthopedic Knee Braces

There are main four types of knee brace

Prophylactic Knee Braces

When someone has a ligamentous injury to the knee, this is the knee brace that is used to reduce the pain and promote quick healing of the injury. It is also used for preventive purposes, and is often worn by players in contact sports like soccer.

Functional Knee Braces

When the knee is already injured, this is the type of brace that is usually recommended by the doctor. So, it is more of a corrective brace than it is a preventive one. No matter the source of the injury, a functional knee brace will reduce the knee’s rotation and provide support for the patient after surgery.

Rehabilitative Knee Braces

As the name implies, this knee brace is recommended when a person is recovering from an injury, especially after a surgical procedure has been performed.

While the knee is healing, a rehabilitative brace will ensure that the patient does not make any knee movements that will harm the healing parts of the knee. It also allows quick healing and prevents any future knee injuries.

Unloader/offloader Knee Braces

For people who have arthritis in their knees or are looking forward to having knee replacement surgery, this is the type of brace that is used to manage their condition. Knee osteoarthritis can be very painful, so this unloader/offloader knee brace is used to provide relief.

This knee brace puts pressure on the patient’s thigh bone, which reduces pain by forcing the knee to bend away from the painful part.

Knee Brace Types By Design

Telescopic ROM Knee Brace

As the name implies, telescope range-of-motion knee braces are meant to control the movement of a patient’s knees. It basically restricts the degree of flexion, so that the patient does not bend the knee in a way that could worsen the injury.

By allowing a restricted range of motion, ROM knee braces can immobilize the knee at certain angles. But it will still be comfortable enough to help the patient move around without assistance.

Telescope ROM knee braces are usually used for the stabilization of the knee when a patient has sports injuries, mild osteoarthritis, hyperextension, meniscus tears, and other similar injuries.

Hinged Knee Brace

Hinged knee braces contain one or two bars that have hinges along the sides of a patient’s injured knee. To hold the brace firmly in place, there are straps attached to the hinged braces.

These knee braces are commonly used for patients who have more serious injuries. Usually, these serious knee injuries require surgical operations, and after the procedure, the early stages of recovery require the use of hinged knee braces to protect the injured ligaments. With this brace, the patient will have protection on each side of their knee. This is what helps restrict movement and reduce pain while the injured knee heals.

Open Patella Knee Brace

The knee brace leaves the patella exposed and is reinforced with a circle of foam to stabilize the skeleton and avoid abnormal displacement of the heel bone, and the open hole design also reduces the direct pressure on the bone to a certain extent.

OA Knee Brace

OA stands for osteoarthritis. So, for people who have arthritis in their knees or are looking forward to having knee replacement surgery, this is the type of brace that is used to manage their condition. Knee osteoarthritis can be very painful, so an OA brace is used to provide relief.

An osteoarthritis brace puts pressure on the patient’s thigh bone, which reduces pain by forcing the knee to bend away from the painful part.
