All You Need To Know About Cervical Collar
Cervical Collars are popular after-care medical devices for patients that underwent spine surgeries. Consequently, they are also helpful as immediate and temporary treatment devices. It is to ensure limited movement to avoid hurting the patient’s neck.
These collars are detachable by velcro straps or hook and lock to accommodate the patient’s neck. Some do have adjustable straps to fit snugly and avoid any irritation. Most Cervical Collars start just below the chin and stop before one’s collarbone.
This article gives you a breakdown of Cervical Collars. It discusses its uses, types, how it works, and things to take note before purchasing one.
What Are Cervical Collars Used For?
Cervical Collars, also known as Neck Collars and C Collars, support your head and neck after experiencing a stressful or traumatic injury or surgery. At the same time, it limits the patient’s neck movement.
It is necessary to have Cervical Collars to allow the neck or cervical spine to heal properly. Wearing Cervical Collars does not usually take long. Most medical practitioners will prescribe patients to wear it for a few weeks or less.
Although really helpful, wearing Cervical Collars for a long duration can adversely affect the patient’s body. In complicated cases, they will recommend that the patient wear it for six months max.
Four Types of Cervical Collar
Philadelphia Cervical Collar
The Philadephia Cervical Collar, also known as Philadelphia Neck Brace, is a rigid type, latex-free foam collar that supports the front and back of the patient’s neck. It is hypo-allergenic and non-toxic because it is usually worn the whole day.
The Philadelphia Cervical Collar consists of two pieces connected with velcro straps. To wear it, patients need to lie on their back first. Then slide behind and place the back piece. Place the front piece of the Cervical Collar, making sure it sits close to the chin.
Finally, secure it with the velcro straps. Although it includes extra steps to wear, it works best for patients recovering from injury or surgery.
Adjustable Cervical Collar
Brands have versions of Adjustable Cervical Collars. However, they all have the same basic features. They also work great for recovering patients.
It is mainly made of plastic and stuffed with padding. Instead of velcro pads, Adjustable Cervical Collars have a locking system to adjust the height and secure the knobs.
It also has a large opening around the trachea for better breathing.
Foam Cervical Collar
Foam Cervical Collars are popular for neck muscle tension and neck compressions. It is soft and comfortable to use, even when sleeping.
It has a velcro strap or hooks and loop closure at the back for easy wear and a snug fit. The polyfoam padding used for this collar is contoured to support the chin and jaw.
This design differentiates itself from other foam-based Cervical Collars with its thicker band and adjustable straps. Although it looks stuffy, it is actually breathable.
Semi-rigid Cervical Collar
Semi-rigid Cervical Collar falls under the soft type. It is made with medical-grade foam with a removable rigid insert, which is adjustable support.
The velcro straps are also adjustable to fit most neck sizes. With that, it is perfect for non-surgery-related purposes.
The Difference Between the Four Types of Cervical Collar

Philadelphia Cervical Collar Brace has a certain traction effect, good support, and firm fixation, but the breathability is a little poor, it needs to be padded with a towel inside to keep the skin of the neck clean and dry, and is listed as the first choice.

Inflatable medical neck collar can be inflated according to the size of each person's neck, use and condition, but the breathability is poor and the wearing comfort is poor. Moreover, the support and fixation strength will change with the inflation volume, which will affect the support and fixation of the neck.

Adjustable neck collar: it is adjustable in height, breathable compared to other types of neck collars, and easy to wear, but the strength of support and fixation is slightly poor, and it is listed as the second choice.

Sponge medical neck brace is comfortable to wear, but the support and fixation strength is poor, and it is difficult to maintain the cervical curve.
Considerations When Buying Cervical Collars
#1 Material
There are two general types of Cervical Collars – Soft Collars and Rigid Collars. The main difference between the two is the materials used. Soft Collar is mainly made of foam or rubber, while Rigid Collar is either plexiglass or plastic.
People suffering from neck pain, neck compression, or Cervical Spondylosis should pick Soft Cervical Collars. It is not restrictive and comfortable to use.
Hard Cervical Collars work best for people recovering from an injury or surgery. It will hold the neck and spine better, but the user will feel discomfort.
#3 Adjustable
There are instances that the Cervical Collar does not fit the patient’s neck size. Wearing ill-fitting collars can irritate the skin and slow down healing.
Fortunately, many Cervical Collars have adjustable straps. Velcro Straps are the most common ones as it is easy to manage and remove.
#2 Comfort and Padding
Some Cervical Collars do not have any chin support. So, people with complicated surgeries or injuries should get one with this consideration. It helps support the weight of your head while your neck and cervical spine heal.
Cervical Collars, especially the hard ones, can be rough on the skin. Make sure to check for ones with comfortable lining or foam.
There are instances where a specific type of Cervical Collar’s padding might be necessary, such as after surgery. Other brands offer built-in padding, while others have removable ones.
Removable paddings for Cervical Collars are the best choice for patients having to use them for a longer duration. The patient will be using this padding for hours or even days straight, so hygiene is a top priority.
#4 Ease of Cleaning
Besides cleaning the removable paddings, the Cervical Collar must be kept clean. It can be difficult for soft Cervical Collars as it is made of felt or foam. One must be extra careful cleaning them to avoid immediate disintegration.
An easy way to clean a soft Cervical Collar is to wash it with warm water and gentle soap. Avoid using strong detergents and bleach because it might cause a reaction to the material.
For hard Cervical Collars, make sure to clean the padding first. As for the actual build, you can rinse it with water and lightly scrub it with soap.
